Karli Massey, a principal communications specialist at Sandia National Laboratories, has successfully completed the examination for Accreditation in Public Relations, entitling her to use the APR professional designation. She is the 17th person in New Mexico to achieve the designation and the first since 2013.

There are more than 4,500 active accredited public relations practitioners across the North America. The APR program, administered by the New York-based Universal Accreditation Board, aims to improve the practice of public relations by assessing competence in 60 areas of knowledge, skills and ability associated with the profession. Candidates who successfully complete the rigorous process, including presenting a portfolio to a panel of three peers and sitting for a computer-based examination, are granted the APR.

Massey has 20 years of experience in public relations and currently leads employee engagement activities at Sandia Labs for its 12,000-member workforce. Prior to returning to New Mexico in 2012, she managed public outreach activities for electric utilities based in Los Angeles and Denver. Now firmly rooted back in her hometown of Albuquerque, she actively supports local groups, including the New Mexico Architectural Foundation, New Mexico Diabetes Advisory Council, and the Southwest Canine Corps of Volunteers. She received bachelors’ degrees in Communications and Political Science from the University of New Mexico.

Professionals earning the APR must renew their credential through continuing professional development, providing leadership to the profession and serving their local communities.

The UAB was established in 1998 by a coalition of public relations professional organizations that today includes the Associaction de Relacionistas Professionales de Puerto Rico, California Association of Public Information Officials, Florida Public Relations Association, Main Public Relations Council, National Association of Government Communicators, National School of Public Relations Association, Public Relations Society of American, Religion Communicators Councils and the Southern Public Relations Federation. Each organization contributes resources and senior-level volunteer members who represent all segments of the public relations profession.
